Strategic Governance at Harvard: Leading Through the Perfect Storm

Governance is not merely supervision. It means ensuring that an organization’s principles are translated into decisions, structures and results capable of generating genuine social impact.
With that conviction, Fortius Consulting, represented by our Head of Public Affairs, Dídac Sánchez, participated from 19 to 22 April in the inaugural edition of “Strategic Governance: Leading with Vision Through the Perfect Storm,” held at the Harvard Faculty Club.
Leadership in a New Environment
Jointly organized by the Governance and Society Institute, ESE Business School at Universidad de los Andes and PAD School of Management at Universidad de Piura, the initiative brought together executives from across Latin America for high-level reflection and training.
Fortius helped coordinate the gathering and accompanied participants through four days devoted to examining the challenges currently facing companies and institutions. The “perfect storm” described the convergence of economic, political, technological and geopolitical pressures that defines the environment in which organizations now operate.
Moving Beyond Silos
One of the principal conclusions was the need to abandon isolated analysis. Economic, political, technological and geopolitical factors can no longer be understood separately. A business decision may simultaneously be shaped by regulatory change, social transformation, international conflict and disruption to supply chains.
Broadening the analytical framework is not merely an intellectual exercise. It is essential to anticipating risks and making responsible decisions.
Business as a Social Actor
Organizations do not operate apart from society. Their decisions affect employees, families, communities and institutions. Boards therefore cannot limit themselves to supervising financial results or managing the present. They must adopt a long-term perspective, understand the context in which they act and assume their social and institutional responsibilities clearly.
Strong Institutions, Principled Organizations
Lasting impact requires more than good intentions. It depends on governance structures that align purpose, leadership and accountability, and on decision-makers willing to preserve institutional principles while adapting intelligently to a changing environment.
